From Paihia
Waitangi sits just across the Waitangi River from Paihia, close enough that a short passenger-ferry crossing from the Paihia wharf is a genuine alternative to driving, alongside the few-minutes drive over the bridge. Visitors based in Paihia for a Bay of Islands trip have the shortest, simplest route to the Grounds of anyone in the region.
From Kerikeri and further afield
Kerikeri is roughly 20 minutes' drive north of Waitangi, and public transport around Northland is limited enough that most visitors staying there drive in rather than rely on buses. Visitors coming from further afield in Northland or from Auckland should budget considerably more driving time and treat Waitangi as a full-day commitment rather than a quick stop.
The hotel pickup window
A transfer is available from selected Paihia hotels, picking up in the roughly 4:30pm to 4:55pm window ahead of the evening's 5:30pm start. Because the window is specific and the pickup points are limited to selected hotels, confirming your exact stop and time on your booking confirmation is worth doing before the day itself rather than assuming a default.
Self-driving versus the shuttle
Driving yourself gives you control over your own day, including the flexibility to arrive early for the day-admission sites and leave whenever you're ready after the evening ends at 8pm. The hotel pickup is the more relaxed option for a group staying in Paihia without a rental car, but it locks you into the operator's timing on both ends of the evening.
Why gate time isn't showtime
Because day admission is bundled into this ticket, treating 5:30pm as your arrival time rather than as the evening's start time means missing the Treaty House, the museums and the waka entirely. Arriving in the early-to-mid afternoon instead turns the same ticket into a full day at the Grounds rather than just an evening booking with a bonus you never used.
The return trip
The evening closes at 8pm, and guests who booked hotel pickup get a return transfer back to Paihia as part of the same arrangement. Self-driving guests can leave straight from the Grounds' car park once the evening ends, which for anyone staying further out — Kerikeri included — is generally the more predictable way to close out a long day.
