Booking the cruise for earlier in a longer Bay of Islands stay, and Waitangi for later, spreads the trip's two biggest commitments across different days rather than doubling up.
Paihia and Russell on a separate day
Paihia and Russell face each other across the harbour, a short ferry ride apart, and both towns are worth a slower day of their own — cafés, the waterfront, and Russell's own early-colonial history — distinct from a Waitangi visit built around the Treaty Grounds specifically. Visitors based in Paihia already have the shortest possible trip to Waitangi, which makes it easy to treat the two as separate outings rather than combining them.
Kerikeri on a separate day
Kerikeri's own historic buildings and the surrounding countryside make for a reasonable half-day away from the coast, and it's close enough to Waitangi (about 20 minutes) that the two can be loosely combined if time is short — a Kerikeri morning followed by an afternoon-into-evening at Waitangi, for instance, rather than two entirely separate days.
